Sexual assault trial of former radio host concludes

Most people in the Greater Toronto Area are likely aware of the sexual assault trial that recently concluded involving a former Canadian Broadcast Corp radio host. Based on the accusations of three women, he faced one count of choking and four counts of sexual assault. The judge who heard the case indicated he will deliver a verdict next month.

One approach the man’s lawyer took in defending him is that his accusers withheld information from the police. His lawyer also asserted that at trial, the man’s accusers lied under oath. Testimony at trial by one of the alleged victims, as well as emails sent to the man from another accuser, which revealed that one engaged in sexual activities and the other flirty behavior with the man, after the alleged assaults, supports those contentions.

The criminal charges were the result of an investigation launched in 2014. That investigation commenced when a dozen women told various media sources that they had been assaulted by the man.

The accused does not deny that he has engaged in “rough sex” with women. At one point he took to Facebook to defend himself against the accusations. In a post he claims that women consented to the activity.

Following the filing of the criminal charges, the man lost his job. If convicted he could also face additional consequences. These things could have a big impact on his life for years to come. While every situation is of course different, all convictions for sexual assault can negatively impact the future of the accused. Because of this, it is vital that anyone who is in a similar situation seeks the assistance of a criminal defence lawyer.
