Toronto woman faces attempted homicide charge

A woman has been charged after a serious altercation resulted in the stabbing of one man and the serious injury of an infant, according to local sources. Toronto police say the attempted homicide occurred when the woman stabbed a man during an argument. So far, no court date has been announced.

According to investigators, the violent altercation began in an Etobicoke apartment the morning of Dec. 13 between a man and a woman who have not been publicly identified by police at this time. The argument is believed to have escalated to the point where the woman began making threats. She is also believed to have been holding a knife at the time.

When first responders arrived at the scene after receiving emergency calls, they found both the man and an infant of unknown age badly injured. The 34-year-old woman believed responsible for their injuries was taken into custody and was scheduled to appear in court the morning of Dec. 14. She has been charged with two counts of uttering death threats, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and attempted murder. The baby remains in critical condition, while the man's injuries appear to be minor.

In cases of homicide or attempted homicide, an in-depth investigation is undertaken by Toronto authorities. If the woman is found guilty of these charges in criminal court, she could -- understandably -- face a lengthy prison sentence. Nevertheless, the burden of proof lies squarely with the prosecution, and every element of the formal charges must be proved by competent evidence that is found to be beyond a reasonable doubt. Her defense representation will focus on ensuring her legal rights were, and are, fully honored throughout her arrest and during the court process.
