Crime report: Man charged with attempted murder

A 45-year-old man faces charges for his alleged role in an assault that nearly turned fatal. Ontario police arrested the man on Aug. 8 after an investigation into the alleged crime. The man was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Aug. 15. It's likely that he is working with criminal defence representation to prepare for the legal proceedings.

According to the police report, officers were called to a neighbourhood in Toronto around 9 p.m. the evening of Aug. 5 to investigate claims that someone had been injured in the vicinity. They found a 49-year-old man they say had been assaulted and was badly hurt. Further investigation led them to release a name and photo of the individual they suspected was responsible for the attack the following day.

Police advised the man was to be treated as armed and dangerous, but he was arrested only two days later. He was charged with attempted murder. It is unclear at this time what prompted police to name this individual as the suspect in this case, but further information will likely become available once court proceedings are underway.

Attempted murder is a serious crime, and if the man is found guilty, he will likely face serious jail time. However, in the meantime, it is the burden of Ontario prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused man is actually guilty of the formal accusations. If police are found to have arrested the wrong man, or if defence counsel can show the arrest was not undertaken in accordance with the accused man's rights, the outcome of the case could be drastically different.
