Allegations of sexual assault against Toronto transit rider

These are volatile times for gender relations issues. How society perceives sexual assault, and how the legal system deals with it, are under intense scrutiny of late. Without a doubt, sex crimes are a serious matter, and it is good to maintain an open dialogue with hopes of changing how people think about these types of crimes. It is, however, a very bad time for anyone accused of sexual assault, as a recently arrested Toronto man will no doubt agree.

The alleged incident happened on April 24, at Kennedy subway station. An 18-year-old woman claims that at about 12:30 a.m. a man approached her inside the station. According to her statement, the man struck up a conversation with her, and then sexually assaulted her. She walked away, but he allegedly followed her onto an LRT, disembarking at Scarborough Town Centre.

On April 25, the 28-year-old man surrendered to police, and they placed him under arrest. The charges against him are criminal harassment and sexual assault. Believing there may be other victims, Toronto Police released a picture of the accused individual along with his name on the internet.

An accusation of sexual assault is a serious matter, and may have a major impact on a person's life. Having the accusation made public may be especially demoralizing. Anyone accused of a crime, however, has the right to defend him or herself against those accusations. Doing so without experienced assistance may not lead to the best possible results. A defence lawyer who handles all manner of criminal law cases may be the right choice for a person facing serious accusations.
