Charges can pile up after a drinking and driving arrest

Not every story of alleged drunk driving ends with a catastrophic collision. However, many of them do end with an arrest. Sometimes, people accused of drinking and driving face multiple charges and may have a difficult legal ordeal ahead. Such is the case with a woman arrested not far from Toronto just recently.

On March 19, a police officer in Brantford saw a vehicle collide with a parked vehicle at around 2:20 a.m. The driver apparently continued driving after the collision. The officer followed the vehicle to a residential location, where the driver parked in a driveway.

The officer approached the vehicle, at which point the driver is alleged to have attempted to leave the scene. In doing so the driver struck the police car. Noticing apparent signs of intoxication, the officer arrested the driver.

A breath test revealed a blood alcohol level higher than double the legal limit of .08. An investigation evidently showed the same driver had struck two other vehicles with her own car. The 22-year-old woman was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, four counts of failing to stop at an accident, driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit and impaired driving.

Drinking and driving is certainly a serious offense, and the quantity of charges attests to how seriously police treat any infractions. Careful examination of the facts of the incident and the arrest may reveal an avenue for defence in any impaired driving case. For the best chance at a desirable outcome, any man or woman in the Toronto area accused of impaired driving may want to talk to a criminal defence lawyer for assistance.
