Sexual assault charges brought against Toronto supply teacher

When a person's job requires him or her to be in a position of trust, anything that erodes that trust can be a major problem. An accusation of sexual assault is a serious allegation that can prove extremely damaging, especially for an educator. A Toronto man now faces this situation after charges were filed against him, stemming from an alleged incident that happened approximately six years ago.

On Sept. 27, 2016, Toronto Police arrested a 36-year old teacher and charged him with sexual assault and sexual interference. The incident allegedly took place while he was working as a daycare supervisor in Scarborough between 2009 and 2010. The victim is reported to be a young boy who was between 5 and 6 years old at the time.

The accused, who currently works with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) as a supply teacher, has been placed on home assignment, pending a court appearance on Nov. 18. Letters were sent home to parents of children attending the school where the man worked. A spokesperson for TDSB reported a list of schools where the accused has worked since 2010, but pointed out the charges are not related to his time with the school board.

Defending himself against these allegations will be critical to the accused's future. A conviction will likely result in incarceration, and will make any attempt to return to his profession likely impossible. Sexual assault is a very serious crime, and anyone accused of it should prepare themselves for a legal battle. A criminal defence lawyer might be the best ally for the fight.
