Authorities in the Toronto area take allegations of domestic violence very seriously. Accordingly, when an individual reports an incident of this nature to law enforcement, in many cases, someone involved in the incident will be arrested. While domestic violence charges alone can be problematic to the accused individual, in some situations they can lead to additional charges. Last month two Ontario men found themselves in this situation.
The men were arrested by police who were called to the scene of an alleged domestic incident. In the course of that call, police conducted a search of two other residences and one man’s car. I the course of those searched police uncovered a variety of guns including long guns, shotguns, a .38 calibre pistol, and an assault-style rifle.
When all was said and done, a woman was transported to a hospital for medical treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, and the two men were taken into custody. A 32-year-old was charged with drug possession and several weapons charges. The other faces weapons offences, overcome resistance by choking, forcible confinement, uttering a threat, pointing a firearm and two counts of assault, including domestic assault charges.
While the specific details surrounding the purported domestic incident are not readily clear, an investigation into the matter will likely provide information regarding what happened. In the meantime, the men charged with the various crimes should be working with a criminal defense lawyer to begin to craft a defense against the charges. The sooner this step is taken, the easier it is for a lawyer to obtain the information he or she needs.
